  • Arts publishers unite to create the biggest reviewing platform for Adelaide festivals

The List and InDaily announce pioneering partnership for Adelaide festivals

    •  The List, InReview and InDaily will join forces in Adelaide this summer to create the biggest independent review platform
    • Free, open access and independent journalism will be given a boost in South Australia
    •  The editorial team plans to review over 200 shows collectively

UK-based arts publisher The List and South Australian reviewing site InReview have announced a new partnership to expand coverage of Adelaide’s festival season. Together, they’ll create a unique platform for championing artists through fair and unbiased reviews, published on the news website InDaily every day.

For the first time, The List’s Adelaide festival reviews will be hosted on the InReview strand of InDaily’s site, pooling resources and giving both publications the chance to cover significantly more shows during Mad March. Both publishers will seek to help Festival-going audiences make more informed decisions, creating a vital eco system for independent publishers at a time when the future of arts journalism requires decisive and disruptive action.

After being a fixture of Scottish culture since 1985, The List has spent the past three years building its presence in Adelaide. Its Adelaide Summer Festivals Guide and Adelaide Winter Festivals Guides have provided extensive, entertaining coverage of highlights from arts, culture, food and drink, becoming an invaluable guide to Adelaide’s year-round Festival programme. Beyond print and media, The List Festival Party has cemented itself as the ultimate way to kick off the Adelaide Fringe, offering an evening of drinks and entertainment that champions the diverse array of entertainment that makes Fringe season special.

InDaily, owned by innovative publisher Solstice Media, has remained a champion of high-quality local arts journalism in South Australia. Its InReview strand has published hundreds of pieces of original critique and journalism enjoyed by more than 60,000 readers each month.

Jo Laidlaw, editor of The List Adelaide Festival Guide, said: ‘This ground-breaking partnership means The List and InReview can support more shows by reaching more people with more reviews over the festival season. We’re thrilled to be working with the phenomenal team at InReview who do so much to keep South Australia’s wonderful culture alive year-round.’

Walter Marsh, editor of InReview, said: ‘From Adelaide to Edinburgh, festival season is all about connecting artists with audiences, and this new partnership between InReview and the seasoned festival-heads at The List will help our independent reviews and arts journalism reach even more readers and arts lovers. You can find us online, in your inbox, and in the crowd from opening night to the final curtain.’

    The List

The List is a multi-award-winning free arts, culture and events magazine that has been helping Glasgow and Edinburgh residents ‘get a life’ since 1985 and it offers the UK’s largest events website. The List won Best Relaunch at the 2023 PPA Awards and then went on to add international publishing to its list of accolades with the introduction of the award-winning Adelaide Summer Festivals Guide and The List Adelaide Winter Festivals Guide. It continues to grow its events arm with ListLive and the award-nominated List Festival Party and Hot 100 events.

  • CityMag wins top national design award

CityMag took home the coveted national award for Magazine Cover of the Year at Mumbrella’s Publish Awards last night. Check out the cover featuring some of Adelaide’s best-known faces and the story about its creation.

CityMag’s lead graphic designer Jayde Vandborg after accepting the Magazine Cover of the Year award.

CityMag‘s 2025 Festival edition magazine cover, published in February, took home the national gong at the award show in Sydney last night, beating finalists including Better Homes & Gardens magazine and publications from Woolworths and Coles .

The judges praised the originality of the food truck line-up concept for the magazine cover including its striking design and inspiring creativity drawing in well-known Adelaide identities, saying it was brilliantly executed.

A two-day photo shoot saw more than 50 well-known South Australians ranging from the festival favourite Gang Gang food truck owners, music producer Motez to new Environment Minister Lucy Hood and the Lord Mayor involved in the project.

“Noting that for a free independent magazine, it delivered a collectors edition that captured festival season and showcased the talent of the team,” they said.

Lead graphic designer Jayde Vandborg said she was grateful for the recognition on the national stage.

“I’m really proud of CityMag and the mammoth effort that went into making this edition,” she says.

“It’s not just a win for me as the designer or for the team who made it happen, but for our incredible arts and culture community in Adelaide, who are featured on the cover.

“Being hyperlocal, CityMag is all about the best of Adelaide and the people that are doing cool, interesting and amazing things in our city and this cover encompasses the best of what goes on here.”

To make the cover, Jayde started with a story of a queue for a festival-time food truck so comically long that it weaves in and out of view on the page, indicating that the food must be extremely good if the wait is ridiculously long.

The food truck in question was festival favourite Gang Gang, featuring co-owners Nina and Morgen Wynn-Hadinata. The shot of the duo sitting on their food truck starts the queue, and was pictured by photographer Jack Fenby, linking to a feature story in the magazine where Gang Gang took on CityMag‘s Chef vs Public BBQ challenge.

    Watch how we made it

For the queue, over two days, Jayde and journalist Helen Karakulak invited talent that featured in the magazine and some of Adelaide’s best-known characters to have their pictures taken.

Jayde photographed and directed the shoot, getting the best out of the talent by encouraging them to have fun first and foremost – festival season is all about being bold, entertaining and creative, and that’s what Jayde brought to life on the page.

Notable faces on the cover include Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith, newly-minted environment minister and member for Adelaide Lucy Hood, award-winning sexologist Jamie Bucirde, award-winning cabaret performer Millicent Sarre and Penny University’s Foti Likouras.

After the bumper photoshoot, Jayde expertly cut each image to create the layout reminiscent of waiting in line for a food truck, as much of Adelaide does during festival season.

“It was designed to be bright, eye-catching, and easily spotted from a great distance and among the chaos of crowds in fringe venues and from the reception we got once it hit streets, it’s safe to say we met our brief,” Jayde says.

“I’ve been passionate about this magazine for so long and am looking forward to continuing its vision, which has always been to tell the stories of this state and its wonderful people,” Zoe, who started with the magazine in 2013, says.

“I’m excited to be in the editor’s chair for the next iteration of SALIFE.”

SALIFE, which is published by Solstice Media, began in South Australia 2003 initially as magazine but has grown onto digital and social platforms.

  • Solstice Media acquires leading travel media publisher – Australian Traveller

Independent media company, Solstice Media, has acquired a major shareholding in Australian Traveller Media, publisher of Australian and International Traveller magazines and digital titles.

The investment will give Solstice Media an immediate 80 percent stake in the company, which will continue to operate as a separate business. The remaining 20 percent will be purchased over time.

Australian Traveller magazine is the number one independent title in the Australian travel media market. It was established by Quentin Long and Nigel Herbert over 20 years ago to provide inspirational content for Australians looking to travel within Australia.

Since then it has grown to include International Traveller magazine for Australians travelling overseas and broadened its digital offerings for both titles. It has a combined print, digital and social audience of 3m per quarter.

Solstice Media has its origins in Adelaide with a digital daily news publication 21 years ago, called InDaily. It recently acquired the national New Daily digital news from Industry Superfunds, which had previously been operated by Solstice under contract. It has also branched into Queensland with InDaily Queensland.

In 2018, It purchased SALIFE Magazine from Canongate Partners and earlier this year purchased the 7am podcast from Schwartz Media.

Solstice managing director, Paul Hamra, said the company had been looking to broaden and grow its offering of categories and types of media products for its existing news audience of over two million readers around the country.

“In those categories, we started by looking for companies and products who have shared values with Solstice – based on independence and quality journalism,”

“Travel is still a very strong category among every demographic – with audiences seeking out not only information about where to travel but also what to do around their own locations – everything from ticket pricing to experiences, trends and the best of each location.

“Australian Traveller Media is a profitable travel publishing company operated by two industry professionals who have been working with Solstice Media on campaigns over the past year, we’ve got to know the team and really liked their approach,”

“We want Australian Traveller Media to continue doing what it does so well – publishing the best, inspirational travel content – it’s business as usual – but now with the benefit of being part of a bigger publishing ecosystem and growth options with additional resources and audience access,” said Hamra.

Australian Traveller Media co-founder, Quentin Long, said “From launch in 2005 Nigel and I had a strict criteria for any potential partner. They had to be great for all stakeholders which we defined as our readers, our staff, our advertisers and all shareholders. Solstice Media met all

these criteria and then some. To be part of their wider eco system is such a great opportunity for our brands and people.”

Having worked together for 12 months we were able to establish the important alignment of values which was a bonus. It may be a cliché but it is truly goldilocks deal for us and Solstice,” he said.

A comprehensive report into the University of Adelaide’s overturned 2024 student union elections was awarded the Political Report Award at the 2025 South Australian Media Awards last night.

InDaily journalist Charlie Gilchrist took out the prestigious trophy for his story, which revealed allegations of misconduct during the election process.

This included revelations that students took other students’ phones and voted on their behalf without their consent during the election, and that a group breached election rules through unauthorised campaigning.

The judges said Gilchrist’s entry “showed tenacity and endeavour in exposing corrupt activities in student union elections at Adelaide University”.

“He dealt with a Chinese student political element which was hellbent on rigging results and exposed the unsavoury practices for what they were,” the judges said.

“Reporting of this standard deserves to be awarded with the 2025 MEAA award for Best Political Report.”

Gilchrist said he was “very excited and honoured to win the 2025 Political Report Award at the SA Media Awards”.

“With the fragile state of democracy in the world at the moment, the role of journalists to shine a light on wrongdoing is as important as ever,” he said.

“I want to thank my brother for suggesting this story and Solstice Media for having the confidence in me to tell it.”

He was one of 18 winners last night at the SA Media Awards, hosted by the journalists’ union, the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance.

Gilchrist was joined on the night by other Solstice Media finalists, Claudia Dichiera and Zoe Rice.

Dichiera was a finalist for her business reporting on the fall of Adelaide’s hospitality industry for sister publication CityMag. Rice was a finalist in the best feature category for SALIFE Magazine’s insight into the Power of Song.

Other winners included Nine’s Ben Avery who was crowned 2025 Journalist of the Year, and the ABC’s Eva Blandis who was named Best Young Journalist.

The awards celebrate the achievements of journalists, photographers and media professionals over the past year and attracted 14 per cent more entries in 2025 compared to last year.

  • Welcome to the new SALIFE editor

Respected Adelaide journalist Liz Walsh has been appointed editor of leading South Australian magazine SALIFE.

Walsh has been a journalist for more than two decades, most recently as a sports reporter for News Corp, covering Australian Rules and cricket. She reports from the sidelines for the ABC during the AFL and AFLW seasons and is co-host of the national broadcaster’s Summer Grandstand program in Adelaide.

Walsh’s editorial leadership roles includes a stint as the Sunday Mail’s features editor. She also has history with SALIFE, previously serving as the title’s deputy editor.

SALIFE, published by Solstice Media which also publishes InDaily and CityMag, will celebrate its 20th year of publication in 2023.

The monthly glossy magazine covers South Australian people, homes, food and wine, fashion and more. SALIFE’s suite of titles also includes the quarterly Gardens & Outdoor Living magazine, and annuals Food+Wine+Travel and Premium Property.

“I’m so excited to return to the magazine, particularly as we celebrate our 20th year in 2023,” Walsh said. “I’m looking forward to continuing to inspire and entertain our readers with great local content about the best of South Australia.”

Solstice Media managing director Paul Hamra said Walsh would take over SALIFE’s editorial leadership at a time when the title is growing in readership, distribution and influence in South Australia.

“Liz Walsh is a perfect fit for SALIFE – a great South Australian journalist with a deep understanding of the state and what it has to offer, so expect to see some amazing local stories, ideas and profiles in future editions,” he said.

“Liz takes the reins with SALIFE is in great shape. Our experience over recent years shows there’s a strong market for quality lifestyle magazines with a local focus.

“We’re looking forward to continuing this growth of the SALIFE brand under her leadership.”

Walsh begins at SALIFE this week, replacing long-time outgoing editor Penny Yap.

  • InQueensland acquires The Weekend Edition

InQueensland has today announced the acquisition of leading lifestyle masthead The Weekend Edition to create a dominant digital news and lifestyle media company.

In a coup for Queensland readers and commercial partners, the acquisition creates an audience of 80,000 subscribers and more than 500,000 monthly combined  website visitors.

InQueensland publisher Peter Atkinson said the merger created a quality weekend supplement for InQueensland subscribers.

“Both InQueensland and The Weekend Edition are renowned for their teams’ knowledge of Queensland and the topics that matter most to Queenslanders,” Mr Atkinson said.

“Our stable of specialist writers and respected columnists write with genuine insight on the big stories affecting our state and this cross-pollination will cement our reputation as a growing, respected media channel.

“Rounding out InQueensland’s Monday to Friday business, political and cultural commentary, The Weekend Edition will become its literal self – a quality weekend supplement for InQueensland readers.”

Since launching in February 2020, InQueensland has emerged as a vital news platform in Queensland, attracting some of the state’s most respected journalists as contributors including Dennis Atkins, Madonna King, John McCarthy, Robert MacDonald, Craig Johnstone and Rebecca Levingston.

The acquisition follows last month’s announcement of InQueensland’s broadcast partnership with Ten News First and continues the independent masthead’s Queensland expansion.

InDaily signs broadcast partnership with 10 News First

Growing South Australian digital news website, InDaily, has announced a broadcast partnership deal with Adelaide’s 10 News First.

The arrangement will see 10 News First video news stories, news updates and breaking news broadcast on InDaily’s website platform and distributed to its subscriber database daily.

InDaily has over 60,000 registered subscribers who engage daily with its news. It is ranked at No 22 on Nielsen’s Digital Media Ratings, with a monthly unique audience of 777,000.

InDaily is operated by Solstice Media, who also publishes SALIFE, CityMag, InQueensland and The New Daily.

Solstice Media’s Managing Director, Paul Hamra, said its audiences were highly engaged, absorbing the site’s breaking news and commentary.

“Our readers also want video content around local, national and world events to complement their online experience. 10 News First was the perfect partner as it does not publish its own digital news service.

Our arts platform, InReview – by the numbers

Since it successfully launched back in February, South Australia’s newest home for arts journalism has published more than 164 stories from 49 contributors. The first 10 editions of the weekly eDM, sent to more than 60,000 registered subscribers have covered 24 art forms and generated a quarter of a million page views. Average time on page has been an impressive 2m 40s.

Over the festival season we published 67 reviews of Adelaide Fringe and Festival performances combined and we continue to work with Writers SA on ‘A Year in Review’ which sees Australian book reviews published at least once monthly.

Our most read article covered the Illuminate Adelaide program launch but the story that generated the biggest reader response was ‘Adelaide needs fearless critics’ which was written by respected arts executive Rainer Jozeps.

InReview has been warmly welcomed to the arts ecosystem by our arts colleagues, arts practitioners, audiences and readers and we look forward to seeing our coverage evolve over the next 12 months.

SALIFE now in Coles, new Premium Property on sale August 5th

We’re excited to announce that SALIFE magazine is now even more widely available than ever before. From May 6, SALIFE magazine will be available in Coles supermarkets in South Australia. For more than 17 years, SALIFE devotees have known they can get their own monthly copy by subscribing or visiting their local newsagent or Foodland supermarket – and last year we added 36 select Woolworths stores to our distribution. However, these 56 new Coles distribution points will introduce thousands of new potential readers to SALIFE magazine every month.

SALIFE Director of Sales Brooke Seward said, “We were excited to see a significant 8% increase in retail sales of SALIFE magazine – bringing new readers to SALIFE in a challenging marketplace.”

SALIFE Homes and Interiors Magazine is to become SALIFE Premium Property, on sale August 5th. The much-loved annual has always been an essential guide for South Australians thinking of building, renovating or redecorating, but our coverage has now expanded to include editorial coverage on SA’s booming real estate market. SALIFE Premium Property will be bursting with design inspiration, showcasing the favourite rooms of South Australian designers, alongside beautifully-presented product pages featuring the latest in home decoration, furniture and homewares. As always, SALIFE Premium Property will explore some of the most aspirational private homes in the state, essential reading for all those looking for inspiration or perhaps just dare to dream.

CityMag’s February Festivals Edition was a hit with readers and advertisers alike! The June edition will feature this year’s 40 Under 40 finalists while also exploring youth and young Adelaide: the institutions and organisations that are shaping Adelaide’s future leaders, across education, business and the arts. It will as ever be your trusted guide into what is new, exciting and worth paying attention to in the city’s hospitality scene, from upcoming food and drink producers to the best bars and eateries.

    Events program update

We finally got to celebrate the achievements of individuals, groups, organisations and towns that have made significant contributions to regional South Australia at the delayed Regional Showcase awards night at O’Leary Walker Wines in the Clare Valley. The event allowed the state’s regions to come together at an awards night to acknowledge the collective impact on South Australia. The 30 finalists and six individual award category winners were awarded on Friday evening at an event that also recognised the AgTown of the Year, announced by Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham. The 2021 program is underway and we’re always on the look out for relevant stories from the regions.

In February and March we ran a number of themed boardroom lunches, hosted by Daniela Ritorto, attended by selected businesses featured in last year’s South Australian Business Index program. The lunches generated plenty of discussion across the various themes, providing additional content and coverage for our sponsors.

This year’s 40 Under 40 awards program launched in March, highlighting the innovation, commitment and diversity of the State’s young leaders. More young South Australian businesspeople have put their hands up than ever before, despite a shorter nomination period than last year. More than 600 referrals and 200 completed applications have been received in this – its fourth year. A panel representing the South Australian business community is in the process of judging the nominees against the selection criteria, with the winners to be announced at a gala dinner on Thursday June 10 at the Adelaide Convention Centre and featured in the June edition of CityMag. Tickets are on sale now

Agreements signed with Google and Facebook

As a political battle raged between Google, Facebook and the Federal Government over its mandatory bargaining code designed to force the tech giants to ‘pay for news’, Google launched its News Showcase product in Australia. It features news content from a range of Australian publishers, including InDaily and our sister sites InQueensland and The New Daily. Designed to bring value to both publishers and readers by providing a licensing program that pays publishers to curate content for story panels across Google services, it also gives readers more insights into the stories that matter. This initiative offers an opportunity for us to continue growing our audience for important local content while providing us with access to new markets and additional commercial benefits.

Not to be outdone, following the passing of the Mandatory News Media Bargaining Code in Federal Parliament we signed a letter of intent with Facebook to pay for its public interest journalism. We were one of the first independent news publishers the only South Australian-owned news publisher to sign an agreement with Facebook.

A new home for the arts in SA

Beginning in February 2021, South Australia will have a new home for arts journalism, with the launch of Solstice Media’s InReview.

InReview will be a new site under the banner of InDaily devoted to arts reviews, news, features and commentary, written by South Australia’s most experienced and credible arts journalists and critics. New content will be published daily, with a free weekly newsletter distributed to our database of subscribers. InReview content will also appear in our print products, CityMag and SALIFE.

With South Australia’s arts calendar growing and getting more exciting each year, we believe it deserves the best, most comprehensive and credible coverage. InReview will provide that, filling a growing void in SA journalism.

    InDaily

InDaily has reinforced its position in Nielsen’s Digital Content Ratings, now consistently ranked at #24 nationally in the Current Events & Global news category, averaging a monthly Unique Audience of 552,000 for the July-September quarter.

Solstice Media has signed up for Symphony and Adslot Media, platforms designed to deliver greater workflow efficiency and effectiveness to the digital media market, making it even easier to book digital campaigns with us.

    CityMag

October saw the return of the much-missed print version of CityMag, with an upbeat ‘green shoots’ edition, featuring the businesses and consumers who kept the city’s metabolism moving throughout our recent COVID-induced hibernation. It also celebrated this year’s 40 Under 40 finalists and winners, profiling the emerging leaders of SA’s business community and highlighting their new ideas and energy.

CityMag’s 2021 Festivals Edition will help you navigate the breadth of local talent – in comedy, theatre, music, visual art and more – and how to use this time of year to support Adelaide’s most under-rated arts venues and organisations. We’ll also have previews of the major shows travelling into Adelaide from further afield, with interviews offering insight into the minds of creators and will hit the streets on February 18.

    SALIFE

With themed titles running throughout the year, SALIFE further cemented itself as the leading go to publication for parochial South Australians who love where they live and are engaged in their local communities.

SALIFE launched a new Premium Property platform, reaching a broad, qualified audience looking for quality properties, investments and new developments. The site features detailed property listings, a digital newsletter and expert social media amplification, giving advertisers the opportunity to promote their listings across the InDaily and SALIFE audience.

Complementing our increasingly popular prestige property coverage across our print and digital products, Premium Property connects vendors, agents and the reader to the best properties on the market, while also bringing to life relevant real estate stories.

SALIFE also launched a new-look Weddings Gallery providing a more engaging reader experience.

Lockdowns shifted many readers focus to their garden, popularity of gardening this year saw the SALIFE Gardens and Outdoor Living Magazine fly off the shelves across nurseries statewide. Printed seasonally this title has been inspiring gardeners for over 10 years.

Covid threw the SALIFE Food and Wine title into a spin earlier in the year. The decision was made to move the launch date from April to November resulting in one of the largest publications we have released. With such a captured focus on intrastate travel SALIFE Food and Wine has proven to be incredibly popular.

SALIFE Homes and Interiors launched at the HIA Gala awards dinner November 7 to over 1000 guests. Showcasing the very best in interior design and residential home in South Australia this magazine contains the most valuable information every renovator, decorator or new builder is seeking.

    Events

It’s been a busy period for our events program, honouring SA’s top businesspeople at InDaily’s annual 40 Under 40 Awards, highlighting the innovation, commitment and diversity of the State’s young leaders. We also counted down SA’s top 100 companies in InDaily’s South Australian Business Index program, providing detailed insight and analysis of the local economy.

The ‘Parafield Cluster’ caused the delay of our annual Regional Showcase event, celebrating the achievements of individuals, groups and SA businesses that have made significant contributions to regional SA. The Regional Showcase event is now scheduled for February 26.

Welcome to the team – Annabel

And finally – please welcome our newest team member, Annabel Borchardt.

She has been appointed to head up our events program and comes to the role after three years as trade and events manager in the London Office of the Agent General of SA.

In the UK, she supported the Agent General’s work to promote SA businesses and identify opportunities in the UK and the EU for those companies. She ran the office’s events, including the South Australian Club – a unique venture aimed at connecting people and businesses interested in what the state has to offer. Prior to this, she worked for Brand SA and consulting firm Ernst & Young managing the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year program.
