Dymocks Heritage Store

Grieve Gillett Andersen

Hailed as ‘Australia’s most luxurious theatre’ upon its opening in 1928, the Regent Theatre is now the only remaining former grand cinema of its era in Adelaide. Boasting many of the original features including the striking façade, ornate plaster and render detailing, the grand space makes the ideal home for Dymocks’ new flagship Adelaide store in the heart of Rundle Mall. Contemporary plywood arch ‘book nooks’ mirror the elaborate plaster arches while bringing the fitout into the present. Just like a night at the Regent was once ‘the place to be’, this grand upper-level retail outlet establishes itself as a destination, with space to linger and take a rest from shopping. The overwhelming public response has exceeded client expectations and defied the challenging retail environment. The refurbished tenancy reinvigorates this important piece of Adelaide’s cultural and built heritage and allows public access once again for a new generation to enjoy.
